Model Train Sets - What They Cost

Model train sets can run from a few dollars for a basic train set, to several thousands of dollars for a model train set loaded that's with accessories. Therefore, it is important to decide how much you want to spend on a model train set. Set a realistic budget for your model train set and stick to it.

Thanks to the internet and sites like "e-bay" you can pick up some real bargain model train sets and train accessories in the secondhand market. Make sure you know exactly what you are buying.

Visit Your Local Model Train Hobby Shop

When you're in the model train hobby shop it can be very easy to blow your budget so it's best to decide your limits before you shop. This will ensure that you dont blow your budget when you spot that perfect (but very pricey) model train train set or accessory. Again it is matter of balancing ambition with realistic objectives. The same considerations apply to how much time you can allocate to building your model train layout. Many a train layout has gone unfinished due to lack of time and money.

Buying a model train set is all about getting value for money without going overboard. When starting off you won't need the most expensive model train set... but nor should you buy a poor quality cheap train set from a discount store. You want pleasure from running your trains... not frustration.

Asking Model Train Veterans

Talk with model railroading veterans about this hobby and many will tell you they still have their very first train set. They'll also tell you how much fun they've had with it. So decide your budget and choose your model train set carefully.
