Selecting A Model Railroading Theme To Model

Model railroading offers so many different options, that it sometimes pays to stick with a theme. Perhaps select an historical era that you are interested in and then select your trains, building and scenery from that era. For example: a model train layout depicting California logging railroads in the 1920s might interest you. Researching a railroading theme can be particularly enjoyable by adding to the fun and also making the model train layout seem more realistic.

Assuming you have a favorite period in railway history, then you might want to base your model train layout around that. The alternative is to cover a wider time frame for your model train layout. Think carefully about what time scale you want to model your train layout on.

The Limitations Of A Small Model Railroading Layout

When you plan a small model railroad layout, it's important that you know the limitations the small space imposes on you and your model railroad set. Although the space you have available for your model railroad set might limit your choice of scales, the major limitation is usually in the choice of themes you can model. In most cases main line model railroad set themes wouldn't fit. Whereas, given that you only have a limited space available for your model train set; industrial, branch line and tramway themes are possibly the best model train layout options to consider. If you must have a mainline theme, but don't have space for it, then you'll probably have to scale your model railroad layout down.

If don't want to compromise, then don't start a small model railroad layout. There are a number of differences that you will need to accept or adapt yourself to when choosing a small model railroad layout: the curves may be too sharp, the angles of the switches may be too steep, and the sidings too short. With a small model railroad layout everything is compressed to the max. But when you think about it, although a small model railroad layout may not be your first choice, it is better than no model railroad set at all!
